UAE’s highest peak

United Arab Emirates, 168km

This short route along the east coast will show you some of the best of the region. The route crosses the mountains, going through the longest tunnel in the United Arab Emirates, through desert roads and then back into the mountains, taking in lovely views of the sea and ending at Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center in Kalba. This sanctuary is home to many different species comfortable in desert habitats, ranging from reptiles and scorpions to larger mammals, such as tahr, caracals and the rare Arabian leopard.

UAE has a perfect motorcycle riding season all year round, including winter riding; the scenery is unlike anywhere else with desert vistas, oceanside rides and excellent winding roads. This trip can also be used as part of a bigger Middle East tour including Oman, which is just over the border.

On your marks
The recently completed Al-Dhaid Camel Racing Arena aims to revive camel racing as a piece of cultural heritage. Dromedaries compete with robot jockeys, and the races attract camel owners from across the UAE and beyond.

A manmade oasis
Al Rafisah Dam presents a beautiful visit and is worth a stop – the area now has a visitor centre and rest stop overlooked by the magnificent Hajar mountains.
