Romania to Morocco

7,800km

This epic journey begins in the bustling city of Bucharest, Romania, famous for its wide, tree-lined boulevards – perfect for riding – and stunning Belle Époque buildings. From here, ride through Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia to the Italian city of Genoa. It’s then a two-day ferry journey to Tanger Med, Morocco.

First up is Chefchaouen, the blue city. Founded in 1471, there are several theories about why it’s blue – some say it represents the sky and paradise, while others claim it keeps mosquitoes away. Navigate winding roads and a changing landscape to reach Fez with its diverse architecture of dars, riads and palaces.

Next are the Atlas Mountains, then Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara Desert, then towards Ouarzazate. Pass the dramatic landscapes of Dades Gorges and the Valley of Roses, and take on the 2,260m-high Tizi n’Tichka pass.

Explore the labyrinthine souks of Marrakech, then head back to the Tanger Med port via UNESCO World Heritage Site Essaouira, legendary Casablanca and Rabat, the capital of Morocco.

Aït Benhaddou, Morocco
This historic ksar (fortified village) is a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture. It also featured as the fictional city of Yunkai in TV series Game Of Thrones.

Sagrada Família, Spain
The return route of this trip goes through Barcelona, so why not visit Gaudi’s basilica. The famously unfinished, church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
