Walter continu\u00f2 a collezionare successi nelle gare su lunga distanza, totalizzando mille punti tondi all\u2019Endurance and Reliability Contest annuale della Federation of American Motorcyclists nel 1908, e dimostr\u00f2 la qualit\u00e0 della sua moto con un\u2019efficienza record di 188,234 miglia per gallone di carburante (circa ottanta chilometri per litro), solamente tre giorni dopo la vittoria nella gara di distanza. Poi, nel 1913, fu fondato il primo dipartimento corse sotto l\u2019attenta supervisione di William S. Harley, e la Motor Company entr\u00f2 formalmente nel settore delle gare motociclistiche l\u2019anno successivo. Il team inizi\u00f2 a condurre prove a cronometro sperimentali a Daytona Beach, stabilendo record ufficiali e non ufficiali. Il 16 febbraio 1920, Leslie \u201cRed\u201d Parkhurst sfrecci\u00f2 per un chilometro in 19,98 secondi e per un miglio (1,6 chilometri) in 32,45 secondi, toccando una velocit\u00e0 di 111 miglia orarie (178 km\/h). Appena un anno dopo, il 22 febbraio, Otto Walker divenne il primo pilota a superare le 100 miglia orarie (161 km\/h) durante una gara motociclistica, e il successo prosegu\u00ec nel 1921 con i piloti Harley-Davidson che vinsero tutti i campionati nazionali. All\u2019epoca Joe Petrali stava facendo furore, e nel 1932 divenne la prima persona nella storia dell\u2019American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) a detenere i titoli di campione nazionale di dirt track e di cronoscalata nello stesso anno: un\u2019impresa che avrebbe ripetuto nel 1933, nel 1935 e nel 1936. Nel 1935, Joe e la \u201cPeashooter\u201d vinsero tredici gare di dirt track del campionato nazionale AMA, battendo quattro record. Quello stesso anno, i piloti H-D<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> vinsero diciotto campionati nazionali su ventiquattro, stabilendo sei record. Nel 1954 Joe Leonard vinse il Grand National Championship AMA con una Harley, e per gli otto anni successivi i piloti H-D dominarono le competizioni. Solo nel 1960, tutti i primi quattordici classificati della Daytona 200 guidavano modelli Harley-Davidson KR, con Brad Andres a chiudere in testa. Ralph White sal\u00ec in cima al podio in quello stesso evento nel 1963, con la sua 750 KR. Nel 1964, Roger Reiman vinse il Grand National Championship AMA e ottenne anche la prima delle sue vittorie consecutive nella Daytona 200. Bart Markel guid\u00f2 H-D al primo posto nel GNC AMA sia nel 1965 che nel 1966, seguito da Mert Lawwill nel 1969. A partire dal 1968, anche Cal Rayborn inaugur\u00f2 una serie di vittorie consecutive nella Daytona 200, con l\u2019ambizione di superare i propri limiti sulle distese salate di Bonneville.
