White Villages of Cádiz

Spain, 172km

The Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos (‘Route of the White Villages’) contains some of the most exquisite small communities in Andalucia. This route winds through the mountainous backcountry of Cádiz province and through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

Most of the villages are centuries old, with narrow winding streets; as well as the whitewashed houses, you can see unusual archaeological sites, castles, little churches and memorable mountain landscapes.

The trip takes you through parkland, with deep ravines close to the sea and unique hotels and guest houses. Make sure you try some of the regional delicacies like the artisanal cheeses, buñuelos pastries, dishes like migas or gazpacho and the traditional mollete bread rolls.

Beneath the cliffs
The rock village of Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most distinctive White Villages as it is situated in a gorge rather than on a hill, with many of the houses built directly into the rocks. Park at the designated parking and walk to the village – parking is very limited.

Atop the rocks
Olvera is considered one of the most beautiful of the White Villages, offering spectacular views with the church and fortress towering overhead.
