The Orchard Route
Belgium, 150km
This circular route is all about unhurried travel along quiet country roads through the beauty of Limburg and showcases the orchards, vineyards, low hills, woods, abbeys, historic towns and romantic castles for which the region is famous. The route is chosen for its rural beauty and passes through the forested hills of Hageland, the nature reserve of Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen, and the wine estates of Haspengouw; it is especially lovely when the cherry, pear and apple blossoms are in bloom in the spring, although it is beautiful at any time of the year. There are many regional delicacies from wine to sweets which are based on the local fruit and flowers – the Syrup Feast on Easter Monday is a regional highlight attracting tourists from across the world.
‘Tuscany of Flanders’
Don’t miss the sights and scents of Borgloon, where thousands of fruit trees bloom during the orchard flowering season.
Forgotten by time
Horst Castle is an imposing 14th century moated castle unchanged since the 1600s and surrounded by beautiful grounds, providing an ideal stop for rest and refreshment.
