San Bernadino and Lukmanier
Switzerland, 288km
This one is all about the spectacular Alpine mountain passes – perfect for those riders who are passionate about hairpins, tight sweeping bends and high-altitude riding. A round trip of about 240km, this hand-picked route starts at Bonaduz and takes in Thusis, Andeer, the San Bernadino Pass, Mesocco, Roveredo, Biasca, the Lukmanierpass, Mustér, Laax and back to Bonaduz for the best roads the region has to offer. The San Bernadino Pass is indisputably one of the highlights of this ride: 50km of challenging hairpins, twists and turns with a deep blue lake at the summit. The Lukmanier Pass is a lower altitude pass and hence open all year round – the wild valleys make this route a scenic Alpine jewel. You can also look out for several breathtaking viewpoints and crashing waterfalls along the way.
A millennium in the making
At the intersection of the Lukmanier and Oberalp passes in Mustér sits the impressive Benediktiner Kloster Disentis, a 1,300-year-old monastery. It remains active as a place of teaching and has a museum on local history.
Defending the valleys
Spread around this loop are several castles. Hohen Rätien Castle is a site of great historical importance and the ruins of Mesocco Castle still cut an imposing shape into the hillside, while the grey remains of Serravalle Castle sit low within the valley. Jörgenberg Castle is also a ruin, while the more unusual Kropfenstein Castle is built into a cliff.
