Salzkammergut lakes

Austria, 150km

The Salzkammergut region of Austria, stretching east of Salzburg, is a magnificent natural landscape of glacial lakes, rolling Alpine hills, remote wilderness and rugged mountains. The area has been dominated by salt mining since prehistoric times, justifying its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This route takes in the best that the region has to offer, starting from Sankt Gilgen and ending at Ebensee am Traunsee about 150km later after circling the Attersee and Mondsee Alpine lakes. The countless bends, mountain roads and incredible scenery are the heroes here in Upper Austria, while the neighbouring states of Salzburg and Carinthia form part of a vast motorcycle-friendly region.

View from the top
It is worth taking the cable car to the top of Zwölferhorn mountain in Sankt Gilgen for the incredible views across Wolfgangsee. Sankt Gilgen itself is a beautiful lakeside town ideal for a break from riding.

Culture, nature and technology
The town of Bad Ischl is rich in architecture, culture and tradition. Take a walk through the gardens of Kurpark or explore inside the Museum Fahrzeug-Technik-Luftfahrt – a renowned vehicle museum with a lot of motorcycles! Alternatively, for the fascinating natural history of the region, visit the Naturmuseum Salzkammergut in Ebensee and take in the Gassel-Tropfsteinhöhle stalactite cave.
