Riviera Ride
Sarandë to Vlorë, Albania, 126km
This winding route in the so-called ‘Land of the Eagles’ takes you past ruined castles, olive groves, thick forests and beautiful beaches. Starting in the ancient city of Sarandë, the route couldn’t be more straightforward, as you follow the SH8 all the way to your final destination. Although you can complete it in a few hours, this is a ride to be savoured, with plenty of places to stop and gorgeous sea views throughout. The road can be narrow in places, so take care and watch out for animals wandering across.
Stunning sandy beaches are a big draw of this region. During peak season you’ll find locals and tourists alike jostling for lounger space, but there are plenty of quieter options available if you’re prepared to go a little off the beaten track – such as Gjipe Beach, reached by a thirty-minute walk down a sandy path.
As you start to approach the resort town of Vlorë, you’ll skirt the Llogara National Park – itself well worthy of a detour, with wildlife including wolves and wild boar, hiking trails and even paragliding points, for the more adventurous.
Riding high
Make a stop at the Panorama Llogara – perched at the top of a series of hairpins, it’s the perfect place to catch your breath and survey the beautiful route from above.
City stop
If time allows, fit in a day or two in Albania’s capital, Tirana – this cosmopolitan city is laidback and buzzy, with fascinating history and delicious food.
