Qawra to Birgu

Malta, 31km

Setting off from the popular resort of Qawra, this route hugs Malta’s breathtaking northern coastline before venturing inland. Malta is positioned between Europe and North Africa, and the influence of both regions can be experienced through the cuisine and architecture you’ll encounter along this ride.

On your journey, you’ll pass by the villages of Naxxar, with its impressive 17th century Parish Church, and Santa Venera, with its imposing Town Hall behind the famous Wignacourt Aqueduct, which was built in the 1600s to transport water from Rabat and Dingli to the capital, Valletta.

The route swoops down to the town of Zejtun, with its narrow winding alleys built in the medieval style, before finishing in the fortified city of Birgu, where you can enjoy views across the Grand Harbour.

Watch out
The Għallis Tower, a small watchtower in Salina that was completed in 1658, still stands at the entrance to the bay as a reminder of the area’s history.

On the waterfront
The imposing Fort St Angelo on the Grand Harbour in Birgu played a key role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Today, it offers wonderful views across the water.
