Golden Spike National Park

When the final section of track for the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was laid on May 10, 1869, it was considered one of the greatest technological achievements of the nineteenth century. Amidst great hoopla, a ceremonial golden spike was driven and rail lines from the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railways were joined together.

Today’s visitors to this powerful celebration of American innovation can see parts of the original railroad grade and a half mile-long stretch of track, upon which sit two working replica steam locomotives. Interestingly, the golden spike itself was donated to Stanford University’s art museum in 1892, where it is displayed today.
