Everyone has heard of the Stelvio Pass in Italy, but fewer know about, or have ridden, Gavia Pass. The SS300 Gavia Pass runs south from Bormio to Ponte di Legno for about 43km and is a truly spectacular road with fast, sweeping bends and hairpins, tight sections and long straights. It also has very little traffic as most riders head to the nearby \u2013 and much more famous \u2013 Stelvio Pass, leaving Gavia relatively quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With steep gradients reaching 10% in places, this makes for a steep and challenging ride. On the south side of the pass, 3km from the summit, is a notorious tunnel: steep, narrow and so dark that it has white and red reflectors to guide riders. There are glaciers at the top of the pass and the temperatures remain low even in summer, so dress accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bianco and Nero
<\/strong>At the summit of the Gavia Pass is the picturesque Lago Bianco, overlooked by the mighty mountain Corno dei Tre Signori at 3,360m. Even more stunning is Lago Nero at 2,014m, located just below the pass on the south side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White War<\/strong>
Below the pass\u2019 summit sits an Alpine lodge with a memorial to the First World War. This area formed part of the conflict known as the White War, which took place at high altitudes along the Italian Front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
