St. John’s to Old Perlican

Newfoundland and Labrador | 165km

This short ride through the Avalon Peninsula begins in St. John’s, the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador. But soon, you’ll find yourself far from city life as you ride between the many small villages that dot Canada’s far East Coast. Riding north on NL-70, you’ll pass through some of the first European settlements in North America, many founded in the early-to-mid 1600s. Along the route, look out to sea and you might spot icebergs or whales. Inland you can watch for caribou, and in the sky you’ll surely spot some of the 35 million seabirds that call this area home.

When you arrive in Old Perlican, head to the charming harbour to see one of the province’s largest fishing fleets. The many colourful boats make for great photos. Call it a day here, carry along the peninsula, or head back to St. John’s for some time exploring the colourful rows of houses known as Jellybean Row.

Whale of a time
Between May and September, the world’s largest population of humpback whales feeds off the coast of the Avalon Peninsula, joined by 21 other species of whales and dolphins.
