Salatiga to Surakarta
Indonesia | 92 km
This relatively short ride takes you into the heart of the fascinating region of Central Java. This area is a heartland of the ethnic Javanese people, with a long history and cultural tradition. It’s also an area of geographical interest, thanks to its hundreds of volcanoes.
The route begins in the city of Salatiga, located in the foothills of the imposing dormant volcano, Mount Merbabu. You’ll be able to see the volcano as you make your way through the city, before heading out into the lush green highlands that surround it. The route takes a wide arc around the circumference of the volcano, offering multiple photo opportunities along the way. After a sharp bend at the Ketep Pass rest area, the road passes between Merbabu to the north and Mount Merapi – Indonesia’s most active volcano – to the south. Before long you’ll turn right onto Highway 16, which will take you all the way to the outskirts of your final destination: the ancient city of Surakarta, also known as Solo.
CULTURAL HOTSPOT
If you have time, be sure to take in the royal walled city of Yogyakarta – a centre for the traditional Javanese arts.
MIGHTY MONUMENTS
The famous temple compounds of Borobudur and Prambanan – both designated UNESCO World Heritage sites – are located close to the route, and are well worth a visit.
