Panorama Route – Graskop to Blyde River Canyon
South Africa, 70km
The Panorama Route in the Mpumalanga province is undoubtedly one of the most epic drives in South Africa. Deeply imbued with historical and cultural significance, the route traverses the north-east of the country and offers breathtaking views of mountain scenery, historic sites, picturesque waterfalls – including the candle-shaped Berlin Falls and the 94m Lisbon Falls – and one of the world’s biggest canyons, the Blyde River Canyon. There are multiple scenic viewpoints along the ride, all stunning; don’t miss God’s Window, Wonder View, Lowveld View and the Three Rondavels.
If you want to extend your trip and see more of the local wildlife, consider adding on a safari – the town of Hazyview is a good spot for accommodation, located close to the route and just a short drive from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger National Park.
Starting point
At Graskop, visit the Gorge Lift for great views over Graskop Gorge; you can also head further south from the town for even more epic sights, including the Bridal Veil Falls and Lone Creek Falls.
Prospectors’ footsteps
The small town of Pilgrim’s Rest was central to South Africa’s gold rush in the 1870s; it has changed little since that time and was declared a National Monument in 1986 in order to preserve its history.
