Osaka to Amanohashidate

Japan | 138 km

Located in the northern part of Kyoto, Amanohashidate is rated as one of the top three most scenic spots in Japan. With groves of pine trees growing on a 3.6-km-long sandbar, it offers a unique vision of natural beauty. Viewed from the mountains at either end of the bay, the sandbar of Amanohashidate, the ‘bridge to heaven’, resembles a mythical, meandering pathway between earth and heaven.

The area is revered for its ancient, strangely shaped pine trees, many of which have their own names including Meoto Matsu (Couples Pine), Nakayoshi no Matsu (Friendly Pine), and Chie no Matsu (Wisdom Pine). Amanohashidate is best seen from the parks in the hills on either side of the bay; Amanohashidate View Land on the south side of the sandbar provides one of the best views as the sandbar is said to resemble a dragon flying up to heaven from this point.

Folding Fan Fortunes
Chionji Temple is visited by people from all over Japan; it has a unique custom, Folding Fan Fortunes, where little sensu or folding fans are hung on the temple’s pine trees for luck.
