Hunsrück and Moselle
Germany, 280km
This circular route around the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate incorporates quaint riverside towns and lush green valleys. As well as being one of the most forested states in Germany, it’s also famous for being one of the country’s largest wine regions.
The route begins and ends in Idar-Oberstein, a gemstone centre and a source of agate and jasper until the 18th century. As well as taking in the fantastic natural scenery, the loop includes visits to Bernkastel-Kues, with its beautiful half-timbered architecture – a townhouse in the market square named the ‘Spitzhäuschen’ dates from the 15th century and is especially worthy of a visit – and Cochem, with its stunning hilltop castle overlooking the Moselle River.
An absolute gem
Steinkaulenberg is the only gem mine in Europe that is open to visitors. See agates, amethysts, smoky quartz, calcite and other glittering rocks.
Step back in time
Journey through 90 years of German automobile history at Zylinderhaus Museum, which houses more than 100 vehicles and over 70 motorcycles.
