Gippsland Gold

Victoria, Australia | 183km

Situated in Victoria’s Gippsland area, Walhalla is a historic gold mining town founded in 1862. While the route through Gippsland country has countless towns and attractions, Walhalla Road which stretches 11 kilometres between Tyers-Walhalla Road and the Walhalla township is as stunning for its forest scenery as it is for the gorgeous ribbon of tarmac that winds through it. Walhalla itself has been beautifully preserved, and there is enough to see and do to fill an entire day. Walhalla Road does continue and loop back around to the township of Rawson but is almost entirely dirt until you reach Thomson Dam, so tread carefully if you commit.

Hills of Gold
Fans of Australia’s gold rush days may well consider a guided tour of the Walhalla Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine. Travel 300 metres into the hillside above the township and get a glimpse into what life was like for the miners of the late 1800s gold rush.

Railroaded
Situated 9.5 kilometres before the Walhalla township, the station at Thomson is the last stop on the Moe to Walhalla Goldfields Railway, which operated between 1910 and 1954. The line was reopened to tourists in 2002 with trips between Thomson station and Walhalla.
