Kalba to Alhafia
United Arab Emirates, 177km
Before setting out from the beautiful coastal destination of Kalba on the east coast, it’s worth paying a visit to Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre, where you can see the oldest mangrove forest in the Emirates, with trees up to eight metres tall.
The ride along the coast goes across the mountains before heading through a 2.7km tunnel from Khor Fakkan to Sharjah – the longest covered tunnel in the Middle East. Once you emerge, head out across dramatic and otherworldly desert roads to Al-Dhaid Camel Racing Arena before venturing back into the mountains. End your journey at Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre, which is home to dozens of native mountain and desert species including the Arabian leopard, wolf, tahr and caracal (or desert lynx).
Saddle up!
Immerse yourself in the centuries-old Middle Eastern sport of camel racing at Al-Dhaid Camel Racing Arena.
Mountain oasis
Stop to admire the view at the Al Rafisah Dam and its large, crystalline reservoir with boating facilities, below the magnificent sandstone Hajar mountains.
