Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and Umihotaru
Japan | 36.2 km
The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is a bridge-and-tunnel expressway connecting Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture and Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture, famed for its spectacular views across Tokyo Bay.
The artificial island of Umihotaru acts as the perfect rest stop where you can see the skyscrapers of Shinjuku, Yokohama Bay Bridge, Mount Fuji, and the Tower of Wind which provides the Aqua Tunnel with air. After emerging from one of the longest undersea tunnels in the world (9.6 km), the road transforms into a 4 km bridge that spans the bay.
Toll Road
While it’s a spectacular piece of civil engineering, cutting the 90-minute trip from Chiba to Kanagawa to just 15, the ¥2,510 toll for motorcycles means that there is an added cost to consider. The view from Umihotaru is worth it though!
