Gangwon is a mountainous coastal province in the northernmost part of South Korea not far from Seoul; Gangwon Nature Road 5: Deep Mountain Scenic Route connects the beauty of the East Sea with the unique mountainous landscape on the coast. Winding roads pass bizarre rock formations projecting into the sea, magnificent beaches alternating with mountains and fragrant pine forests and undulating paddy fields. Temples and pavilions along the wayside and small fishing villages offer a view of authentic South Korea.

SOGEUMGANG RIVER OBSERVATORY
Boasting superb views of the strange rock cliffs along Sogeumgang River, this is best seen in autumn, when the red leaves make the views even more spectacular.

ABANDONED PAST
Cheoram Coal Mine History Town in Taebaek is a monument to a historic but short-lived boom in coal production. Once, 40,000 coal miners lived here in distinctive ‘stilted houses’; now it’s a photogenic ghost town.
