Nullarbor Plain
South Australia | 1,200km
You’ll need to plan carefully to tick this particular 1,200km jaunt along the Eyre Highway off of your bucket list; plus your mileage will likely double once you have got to and from the remote start and end points of Ceduna and Norseman. Aim for a maximum of 650-700 kilometres per day and be sure to top up your tank at every opportunity – fuel stops can be scarce and missing a servo is not a risk worth taking. The lack of reception will render your phone useless so pack a physical map; however, navigation is less of an issue given that it’s pretty much one road all the way. In fact, the 147-kilometre stretch from Caiguna to Balladonia is totally devoid of corners. This is no ordinary road trip – it’s an epic adventure that will last you a lifetime!
Big fans
The Penong Windmill Museum showcases old, new, small and downright huge ‘mills, including ‘Bruce’ the biggest windmill in Australia. What started out as a tribute to farmers’ whirling workhorses, that have since been replaced by solar panels, this collection is now firmly on the list of quirky roadside attractions.
Drive the distance
Nullarbor Links is a unique 18-hole, par 72 golf course; spanning 1,365 kilometres, it is also the world’s longest. Each hole is located in a participating town or roadhouse along the Eyre Highway and features a green, a tee and a somewhat rugged fairway. Add the spirit of competition to your crossing and have some fun on the way.
