Le Tour de la Gaspésie

While this route around the stunning Gaspé Peninsula can be ridden in either direction, it’s worth travelling counter-clockwise in order to keep the sea by your side – especially along Chaleur Bay, designated one of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. Look closely and you might spot the blowhole spout of a humpback whale or Atlantic white-sided dolphin. On the inland side, there’s excellent wildlife viewing, too – watch for moose, red fox and 246 species of birds at Forillon National Park. Take a detour to Bonaventure Island to see the world’s most accessible colony of Northern Gannets or head to Parc national de la Gaspésie to see the only caribou herd south of the St. Lawrence River.

While this 10-hour ride could be completed in a day, there are so many museums, historic sites, and villages along the way that it’s worth an overnight. Take your time to enjoy the dramatic sea cliffs, boreal forests, and ocean views that make this route a rite of passage for every Québécois.

Culinary delights
Surrounded by the sea, it’s no surprise that La Gaspésie is known for its fish and lobster. Perhaps less obvious are the region’s specialities of venison, emu, gourmet deli meats, pickles and preserves. Of course, you’ll also find Quebec’s world-renowned cheeses and plenty of opportunities to seek out the perfect croissant.
