Niagara River Parkway
Ontario | 59 km
Known as one of Ontario’s most scenic routes, this smooth road offers sweeping turns and gentle curves as it follows the banks of the Niagara River.
Start in the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a great spot to grab a coffee or take a quick stroll before hitting the road. Pause at the Brock’s Monument National Historic Site in Queenston Heights, which commemorates the first major engagement in the War of 1812.
Things take a more whimsical turn at the Floral Clock, a 12-metre-wide working clock planted with thousands of bedding plants and flowers, with a small tower that chimes on the quarter hour.
Next up is the highlight of the route, the iconic Niagara Falls. While you’ll get stunning views just riding along the Parkway, it’s worth a stop to walk to the observation area for some photos.
Before embarking on the final stretch to Fort Erie, visit the Butterfly Conservatory to walk among more than 2,000 butterflies. End your journey at Old Fort Erie National Historic Site, location of the bloodiest battle in the War of 1812.
Step into the past
Both Brock’s Monument and Old Fort Erie offer battlefield tours with staff in period dress. At Old Fort Erie, check out the daily musket demonstrations or time your visit to see the 40th anniversary of Canada’s largest battle reenactment in August.
