10 for ’26 Ride #9: Borden Carlton to Wood Islands
Prince Edward Island | 196 km
Image: Tourism PEI
Check-in location
Covehead Harbour Lighthouse, 1530 Gulf Shore Pkwy. East, Covehead, P.E.I., C0A 1P0
This ride starts near the Confederation Bridge in Borden-Carlton and ends near the Northumberland Ferry terminal in Wood Islands, making it a perfect add-on to travels in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia – but it’s a worthwhile exploration of the Island on its own.
The highlight is the Gulf Shore Parkway along the stunning red stone cliffs, sandy beaches and rolling dunes of Prince Edward Island National Park, which covers much of the ride from Cavendish to Dalvay-by-the-Sea.
PEI is believed to have the greatest concentration of lighthouses in all of North America, averaging one every 55 kilometres. You’ll find three of the iconic red-and-white beacons on this route, at North Rustico, Covehead Harbour and Wood Islands. The Wood Islands Lighthouse is open as a museum – climb to the top for unbeatable views in all directions as you end your ride.
Flavour of the region
Time your ride to catch the Sommo Festival in Cavendish in September. Bringing in big-name musical acts, this two-day celebration of food, drink and music was only founded in 2023 but has quickly become a can’t-miss event.
