You won’t need to keep a close eye on your GPS for this one. From Gasoline Alley Harley-Davidson, head north out of Red Deer along Highway 2, then east on Highway 11, better known as the David Thompson Highway. Then, just keep going for about 250 km until you reach Saskatchewan River Crossing.
But don’t let the lack of navigational complexity fool you. This historic route named for the man who mapped much of Canada rolls through fields, forests, plains and foothills, past lakes, rivers and waterfalls into the Rocky Mountains, with stunning changes in views and landscape along the way.
Living history
For an in-depth look at a historic trading post, complete with bison herd, plan to visit the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site about an hour outside of Red Deer along the North Saskatchewan River.
