Riding tips: Steering head
Ensure your steering head is kept in tip-top condition for a smooth ride with no surprises
The condition of the steering head on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle can have an effect on steering and handling. A steering head that’s too tight can interfere with the ability of the motorcycle to absorb a weave. A steering head that’s too loose can interfere with the motorcycle’s ability to absorb a wobble.
Taking your motorcycle to a Harley-Davidson dealership for its recommended service intervals includes steering head bearing lubrication and adjustment as part of the scheduled service. Timely service by a Harley-Davidson technician performing proper checks, adjustments, and lubrication can keep your Harley-Davidson motorcycle operating at peak performance.
Fortunately, steering head problems are relatively easy to diagnose, and assessment of steering head movement is part of the multi-point inspection included with H.O.G. membership. Authorized technicians will also have access to the special lifting methods; swingback, and model-specific swing-by or fall-away measurements; and the service tools and lubricants necessary to ensure your steering head is in optimal condition, correctly adjusted, and lubricated.
