World’s Largest Buffalo Statue
Jamestown, North Dakota | 226 miles
In the early days of the American West, the thunder of tens of millions of buffalo reverberated through the plains. By the end of the nineteenth century, only several hundred of the giant beasts remained in the wild, decimated by the arrival of the transcontinental railroad and indiscriminate hunting. Today, a 60-ton, 26-foot-tall concrete statue known as the “World’s Largest Buffalo Monument” sits atop a bluff overlooking Jamestown, ND. Created in 1959 by sculptor Elmer Petersen and later christened “Dakota Thunder,” the behemoth bovine pays tribute to the American bison.
