Town of Hell
Hell, Michigan | 67 miles
Unlike the biblical version, Hell, MI is a pleasantly charming place. The unincorporated Michigan township, about 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, was settled in 1838 by George Reeves. The origin of the community’s name is unknown, but one popular story holds that when Reeves was asked the name of his settlement, he replied “You can name it Hell for all I care.”
You probably won’t want to spend an eternity in Hell, but you may want to pick up a souvenir or two while you’re there. We don’t recommend waiting ’til hell freezes over before visiting the town; winters in Michigan can be quite biting.
